About the Artist

Welcome to Brenda Hurley Art, a website where I share my paintings that reflect the beautiful and varied landscapes of Canada and, in particular, Northern Ontario. Throughout my life, I have had a keen interest in the arts and always planned to take up some form of painting when life slowed down a bit and time permitted. When I retired in 2012, I began to search for an artistic outlet and discovered a love of oil painting.  The buttery consistency of the medium and vividness of colour inspire and excite me. As you will see from the examples posted on this site, I enjoy using vibrant colour and dynamic brush strokes in my paintings. 

I paint landscapes and florals that highlight the beauty of nature in an impressionistic and somewhat whimsical way. I am inspired by many great Canadian impressionistic artists from the past, most especially The Group of Seven and Tom Thompson, as well as many contemporary artists currently working in the Canadian and American art scenes. I have also been privileged to attend several art retreats with award winning Canadian landscape painter Gordon Harrison. Gordon's passion for his art and his generosity in sharing his techniques during his coaching sessions have contributed greatly to my growth as an artist and finding my own voice with oils and canvas. I have incorporated his technique of using India Ink as an underpainting into my work, which gives my paintings depth and sets the mood of each work. 

My paintings can be found locally in my hometown of Thunder Bay, Ontario at several local galleries and businesses, including Fireweed and Station Market. I regularly participate in local art shows and virtual art platforms such as The Square Foot Show, The Sweet Sixteen Show and online shows at The Hunter Guise Gallery. I am an Associate Member of the Society of Canadian Artists,  the FCA as well as the ECOAA.

My paintings are original oils and are usually sold framed. Black floating frames are used for my wrapped canvas work and my canvas panels are framed with black plein air frames. Paintings that are not framed are clearly labelled in the description. All paintings are sold ready to hang. I offer free delivery in the Thunder Bay area and shipping to your location can be arranged at an additional cost.

For the past several years painting has become a major focus of my life . My artistic journey has helped to fill a huge void left by a life changing  personal loss in 2018. Time spent “pushing paint around” is never wasted; it brings great joy and a wonderful and fulfilling purpose to life. Over the past several years collecting original art and "pushing paint around," creating art has become a major focus in my life. My work (and myself) continue to grow and evolve and I'm enjoying the journey.
